Beck Hansen, better known simply as Beck, who rose to prominence ten years ago with the release of “Loser”, has grown to become one of the most critically acclaimed musicians of the ‘90s and early ‘00s. Beck’s music is the definition of eclecticism, incorporating elements of folk, rock, hip-hop, blues, country, psychedelic, and other seemingly contradictory genres. It creates a unique, collage-like sound all his own. His latest CD, Sea Change, is a poetic potpourri of moody mixed ballads but capturing this collage of sounds visually is no easy task. Lighting Designer Stan Crocker was assigned the task and turned to an Ed and Ted’s supplied Martin lighting rig to help create the fitting moods. Stan used color and effects from MAC 2000 Wash and MAC 2000 Profiles to interact with abstract digital painting from Jeremy Blake, whose work Beck admires. Blake’s unique paintings were displayed on a large, central projection screen, and Stan, whose color choices were influenced by Jeremy’s color-morphing abstract projections, chose shades and textures that complemented those digital paintings. Stan projected matching colors and patterns onto soft goods - scrims and fabric - both stage right and left, as well as over a large fiber optic star curtain. The MAC 2000 Wash were used for general coloring of the stage and coverage on a large backdrop curtain. Beck toured the US this past summer before crossing over to Europe for a Euro Festivals tour. |
